INVESTIGATIONS are being carried out after work was done to a controversial fence without permission.
Residents snapped photographs of welding being done to one of the metal fence panels on Mistley Quay.
It is thought screws taken out by visiting sailors some weeks ago, which made the fence panel into a makeshift gate, were being welded into place.
The move has sparked interest of residents, sailors, and campaigners who are waiting to see if a new law activated by Tendring Council earlier this year will now be put into force.
The Article 4 Direction states that any repairs, maintenance or replacement of the fence need planning permission before being carried out.
Carlo Guglielmi, Tendring Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “The council has received an email and photograph of the work taking place to Mistley Quay fence and is investigating this matter.”
In September 2008 the metal fence was installed by quay owners Trent Wharfage after health and safety advice.
But residents and sailors hit out at the move and many have since protested against the fence, calling for it to be removed or replaced with a smaller alternative.
The Article 4 Direction was hoped to eventually see the fence removed and give residents a chance to have a say over what else could be put in its place.
Trent Wharfage declined to comment.
