HARWICH’s part in the First World War will be remembered at a special commemoration event this Sunday.
The Harwich Society and the Electric Palace have joined together to host the event in honour of the centenary of the start of the war on August 4, 1914.
The evening will begin at 5.30pm with an illustrated talk on Harwich in the First World War and will include information on the first shot of the war at sea, which was fired by a Harwich Destroyer HMS Lance, the story of local hero Captain Charles Algernon Fryatt, and the surrender of U-boats into Harwich Harbour.
At 7.30pm the Electric Palace will show All Quiet on the Western Front, the 1930s film from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque.
The cost for the talk, refreshments and film will be £10, the film only will cost £6, plus Electric Palace membership.
On Monday St Nicholas’ Church in Harwich will be holding the poignant, reflective service on Monday at noon.
There will also be a video package paying tribute to those who died.
