HEARTBROKEN members of Michael Beckwith’s family have launched a campaign to help his mother give him the “send-off he deserves.”
Mr Beckwith, 44, was attacked by masked men in Barrack Lane, Harwich just before 10pm on Sunday, July 31.
He was beaten so badly with iron bars that he later died from his wounds in hospital on Tuesday, August 2.
He had been recovering and gave a statement to police before he died from a pulmonary embolism.
It is alleged Mr Beckwith was threatened on Facebook days earlier.
Mr Beckwith, who worked at Connolly House nursing home in The Street, Weeley, lived with his mum, Iris, in Goodlake Close, Dovercourt.
He was an Elvis Presley and classic car fan, a keen fisherman and a member of Harwich Angling Club.
Jo Leathem, Michael’s second cousin, said the whole family is in a state of shock.
“My dad’s cousin Michael was brutally attacked and sadly died from his horrific injuries,” she said.
“He must have been so scared, I cannot even imagine how he felt at the time.
“I mostly think of his mother and how she will cope.”
She added: “We would like to raise some funds to help his mum Iris give him the send-off he deserves.
“Michael was a loving, caring son who devoted his life to care for his mother and to helping others.
“He was a mental health care worker and was greatly thought off by all who knew him.
“Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated.”
