A CHURCHWARDEN has pleaded with thieves to return a bench after it was stolen during a heartless theft.

The bench was one of three which had been donated to All Saints Church, in Great Oakley, by a kind-hearted member of the community before they died.

It was first noticed the sentimental seat had been taken last Thursday as Churchwarden Brian Willis headed down to the Grade I listed building, in The Avenue, to mow the grass.

“I don’t usually cut the grass,” he said, “but the church’s mower had broken and so I headed down there, only to notice the bench was missing.

“It was last seen on Tuesday or Wednesday but now it has disappeared. It’s a bit low stealing from a church isn’t it?

“We are very upset and disappointed about it. If those who took it could find it in their hearts to return it that would be fantastic. I’m not interested in punishing them, I just want it back.”

The three benches, which cost the donor £400, have been enjoyed by villagers in the tranquility of the churchyard for the three years since they were purchased.

Mr Willis explained the church will not be deterred by what has happened and is determined to ensure the community can still enjoy taking a moment in the peaceful haven.

He added: “We will replace the bench, it will remain a lovely spot to enjoy.

“People have been very upset during these difficult and it has been a stressful time for everybody; some have suffered more than others.

“Many visit to escape the world, I personally find it very restful and calming and often find myself sitting there. It’s a lovely place to be in, especially in these times when mindfulness is highlighted – people come to get away from their worries.

“We’ve now been forced to tuck away the other two benches until we can ensure they can be secured outside. I was afraid if someone has taken one and got away with it then they might come back for the others.”

Investments are now being made for concrete blocks to secure the benches to, as well as an engraving of the original donors name.

And in response to the incident, villagers have now launched a fundraiser to help replace the bench in an act of defiant community spirit.
