A SUPPORT group for veterans across north Essex held a service to commemorate a poignant date in the nation’s calendar.
The North Essex Veterans' Support Group held a service to mark VJ day on Sunday.
The new initiative launched in May to predominantly focus on post-traumatic stress disorder ex-soldiers may suffer with.
It was set up by former British Army soldier Jamie Robinson, his wife and Sharon Robinson with the help of volunteers from the community.
Sunday’s service was conducted by Kerry King and the reading was carried out by Mistley Parish Council’s chairwoman Charlotte Howell, who also laid a wreath at Mistley’s war memorial in High Street.
The service was well attended by members of the support group and the public, with Mr Robinson reading the Kohima Epitaph and thanking everyone for attending.
Reflecting on the commemoration, Sharon Robinson said: “It is important we never forget the sacrifices made by so many, especially in light of what is happening in Afghanistan right now.
“We need to let our armed forces know how proud we are of each and every one of them. During all conflicts and wars they were all doing their jobs to the best of their ability and we will always be here for them.”
