CONTROVERSIAL plans to create hundreds of homes in Dovercourt have been put out to consultation.

Outline planning permission for the 300-home estate, on greenfield land off Low Road, was approved by Tendring Council in September 2018.

The plans were given the green light following more than 70 objection letters being submitted to the council's planning website with campaigners highlighting fears over flooding, traffic pressures and a lack of infrastructure.

The developer has now revealed proposals for the finer details of the estate, landscaping, layout, and scale.

As part of the plans, Barratt David Wilson Homes are looking to improve the local highway network and upgrade the junction at Ramsey Road and Oakley Road to increase capacity.

The developer is also proposing to invest in local cycleways and bus stops to promote more sustainable forms of transport.

They said: "These new homes, including 90 affordable homes, will help local people to take their first step onto the housing ladder and continue to afford to live in the area they grew up in and call home.

"It's only right that new homes are accompanied by a plan to level-up local services and our proposal will do exactly that, with funding ringfenced to upgrade the local Fronks Road Family Surgery and approximately £3,000,000 to improve local schools.

"Our proposals will provide the details required by the outline planning consent to increase capacity in the local highways network and measures control the speed of vehicles along Low Road.”

The site benefits from an allocation within Tendring’s Section 2 Local Plan, which is finally set to be adopted this year.

But councillor Pam Morisson, who is responsible for the Dovercourt Tollgate Ward fears the development might not be right for the area.

She said: "Having met with the developers it is clear that they wish to work with the community to ensure that the proposed development will be as attractive and sympathetic as can be achieved. "However we cannot ignore the fact that our local infrastructure cannot support large additional developments.

"We simply do not have the doctors, dentists, school places etc to support what is being proposed."
