Sir Bernard, Harwich and North Essex MP, backed Suella Braverman, Attorney General for England and Wales but she has been eliminated from the contest.
Colchester MP Will Quince choice of former chancellor Rishi Sunak looks to be faring better as he leads the race, winning the second ballot with 101 votes.
Penny Mordaunt received 83 votes whilst Liz Truss secured 64 votes.
