RESIDENTS have been praised for springing into action after yobs set fire to a playing field in Wrabness

The incident on Thursday, July 28, saw grass set on fire in the village.

Wrabness Parish Council has commended the residents who quickly put out the fires before they spread.

A spokesman for Wrabness Parish Council said: “Three fires were lit on the playing fields, which is deeply disappointing and concerning.

“Luckily the grass is quite short so the flames did not catch on and spread. Residents reacted quickly with buckets of water to put the fires out.”

This is the first incident in the village involving fire this summer but Wrabness has not been so lucky in the past.

Two years ago the village saw five beach huts on the shore burn down.

The spokesman added: “At this time of year there are accidental fires considering barbecues and other things but it's really upsetting to hear that people are deliberately starting fires.

“We were informed about the playing field incident at around 6pm and contacted the Essex Community Policing Team who had a patrol through the village the next morning.”
