A CYCLING is encouraging residents to be more enviromentally friendly by comparing train ticket and fuel prices with costs of cycling in its research.
Jorvik Tricycles compared figures from journeys between Harwich, Manningtree, and Mistley.
Figures show the journey from Harwich to Manningtree is 24.2 miles and a return train ticket costs £8.30 whereas the cost per mile for fuel is £4.11 and the cost per mile on an electric cycle is 90p.
A spokeswoman for Jorvik Tricycles said: “Travelling by bus or by train is usually considered a more economic and environmentally friendly way to travel to work.
“Having said this, the cost of travelling to and from work does begin to add up, especially if you're doing it everyday or even just a few times a week.
“Besides the financial benefits of cycling into work, there are great benefits for your mental and physical health as well as for the environment.”
Additionally a journey from Harwich to Mistley is 25 miles and costs £8.30 by train as well.
The cost per mile for fuel is £4.25 and cost per mile on an electric cycle is 93p.
