RUNNERS, joggers and walkers alike enjoyed a day out as they took part in an annual trail challenge.

The Mayflower Trail Challenge, organised by Manningtree Rotary, took place on Sunday, and saw more than 190 people take part.

Entrants, ran, walked and jogged the 13.1 miles from Harwich to Mistley along the Essex Way finishing at Mistley Rugby Club.

A spokesman for Manningtree Rotary Club said: “Once again we were pleased to have local celebrity David Webb of Hi-De-Hi fame start the race off at the Harwich Low Lighthouse.”

Club president Stephen Coiley took pictures with cosplayers in their superheroes as he enjoyed the event.

Mr Coiley said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped the club raise a significant amount for the charities and good causes that Manningtree Rotary support throughout the year.

“I would also like to thank the superheroes who cheered the entrants home and handed them their medals at the finish line.”

Manningtree Rotary club's own superhero John Bishop, 87, was once again walking in aid of Whizz Kidzz.

Over the years that he has entered the event Mr Bishop has raised several thousands of pounds for the charity.

Mr Coiley added: “Participants, as well as trying to challenge themselves were also taking part for their own chosen charities and the club are pleased that even more money will be raised for the good causes they are supporting.

“We would like to thank all of our sponsors who helped make the race possible. Greater Anglia who provided free train travel for the participants, Rose Builders who sponsored the medals, Water Direct who supplied all of the water for the event and Manningtree Tesco Express for the much needed chocolate at the end of the race.

“A special thank you to Mistley Rugby Club for opening up the club house to allow people to get changed and by refreshments.”
