Pictures of Remembrance Day service held in Harwich

Civic dignitaries received a salute from the parade of veterans and community groups in the town

Then, those assembled marched to the town’s war memorial in Fronks Road accompanied by groups such as the Essex Police Cadets.

Dale Cheesman, treasurer of the Harwich Royal British Legion, said: “The morning started at Merchant Navy memorial, where we then attended the Minesweepers R.N memorial before the main memorial at Fronks Road for 11am.

“There was great attendance of members of the public, standard bearers and wreath layers covering all generations, the Police Cadets marched to Fronks Road; it is lovely to see the youth taking part.”

Deputy Lieutenant Nigel Spencer read the poem Flanders Fields before the moment of silence.

Mr Spencer then led the town in laying a wreath representing the King, followed by mayor Ivan Henderson and the Royal British Legion, after that other services laid their wreaths.

In the afternoon standard bearers and those who wanted to parade to Church mustered at 2.30pm and the civic service followed shortly after at 3pm.

Dale added: “It was a lovely service, we also had the Next Gen team of Harwich Sing Tendring voices perform which was great as well.”

Members of Harwich RNLI attended three memorial services, including the Merchant Navy Memorial at 10am and the second service at the Cenotaph at 11am.

On Thursday, November 11, both Harwich Lifeboats decorated with their own personal poppy launched to lay a wreath at sea to honour and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during times of conflict.

At precisely 11am the vessels’ engines were switched off, and the two minutes silence was observed before crew member Sian Roberts laid a wreath created by herself on the water.

Community groups around Tendring also held different services and events to mark the occasion.
