BRAVE firewalkers took to the coals in aid of Harwich's cash-strapped Ark Family Centre.
A total of 14 people took on the fundraising challenge on Sunday, November 5.
Jessin Hood facilitated the training and the fire while Andrea King hosted the event at the Royal Oak in Dovercourt.
Following two hours training and with the support of a large crowd, they all walked across the coals in turn.
Claire Bridges, manager of the Ark Centre, said: “The crowd were amazing and cheered each and every one of them as they all found the warrior in themselves and walked.
"We raised an incredible £3,000 and money is still coming in.”
One of the firewalkers, Gilly, said: “I was nervous and apprehensive but with everyone's support, the empowerment overwhelmed me and I did it.”
Another walker, Phil, added: “I have never experienced anything like it.
“So focused in the moment you forget all of your worries”.
Claire added: “We started the autumn with a huge fight ahead of us for The Ark to stay afloat but due to events like this and the huge community spirit the future is looking bright.
“We continue to ask for people’s support and although the fight isn’t over just yet we appear to have turned a corner.
"I would like to thank each and everyone one of the people who made Sunday happen.”
Andrea King said: "It was a brilliant day, we had a couple of 100 people spectating.
"We had 14 people take part in the firewalk. It was just an amazing day.
"The weather held off. There was nothing not to enjoy.
"We thank all the people who came out to support it."
In September, the Standard reported fears for The Ark Centre’s future as it faced financial difficulty.
The Ark Family Resource Centre, which is based on Main Road, celebrated its 70th anniversary this year.
The centre began during the great flood in Harwich, acting as a crisis hub for those affected.
In its long existence, the centre has evolved into a valuable resource, providing a nursery for two to five-year-olds, an outreach team that supports families with everything from parenting and budgeting to domestic abuse support and social care intervention.
