A POPULAR annual treasure hunt across historic Harwich has raised cash to help stage this year's shanty festival.

The Shanty Festival Treasure Hunt attracted treasure hunters of all ages on Saturday, December 30.

It was held to raise money to help with the running costs of the Harwich International Sea Shanty Festival, which is set to take place from October 11 to 13.

Treasure hunt participants were given a list of clues and then had to try to figure out the answers by going to locations across Harwich.

Both adults and children took part in small groups with the joint first-place children being named as Hazel Prosser, Adam Rudland and Adam Sandquest.

The first-place adult winners called the 'Mayflowers' who scored 19 out of 20 and in second place and third place respectively, were Andy and Maggie Schooler, scoring 18.

In joint third place were the 'Alexanders' group as well as Peter and Sheila Davis with Cathy Offord, scoring 17 out of 20.

Adult questions included what “He met his end in MDLV?” (William Bamford (burnt at the stake in 1555) and the place of “imprisonment for newlyweds?" (Bridewell house).
