RESTORATION works on an iconic Harwich boat damaged in a suspected arson attack could start later this month.
The LV18, at Harwich Quay, was damaged in one of a number of suspected arsons in the town on February 2.
The ex-Trinity House vessel LV18 is the last surviving example of a manned light vessel in British waters and it starred in Richard Curtis’ 2009 movie The Boat That Rocked, starring Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans.
It has now been assessed by a highly qualified marine surveyor and marine insurance assessor.
It is hoped that the cleaning and restoration of the vessel can start later this month or in early March.
Tony O'Neil, of the Pharos Trust, which runs the LV18, said: "We needed to get the right team of professionals together and haven't been able to say very much until the site meetings had been held and the necessary legal and health and safety steps were accomplished.
“Our marine surveyor will overview the process and ensure all regulations are followed.
"We are, of course, extremely grateful to Essex Police and Harwich Haven Authority for their continued support."
A GoFundMe appeal has been launched to help raise cash for the restoration with £5,000 of the £25,000 target being raised so far.
Tony added: "We had planned to be involved in the 60th anniversary of offshore pirate radio, but we are working hard to ensure that the ship is ready for public events happening at Easter."
