RESIDENTS were left worried after a large hole appeared in the sea wall in Harwich.
A dog walker spotted a number of bricks missing from the stone wall at Beacon Hill Fort, over the Easter weekend.
Max Goulding was "surprised" by the discovery on March 30.
He said: “I first noticed it on Saturday while on my daily morning walk with my two French Bulldogs.”
The hole is in the sea wall that partially surrounds the old Beacon Hill Fort.
“The hole goes under the promenade.
"I’m very surprised the promenade was not closed to the public when it first appeared after the storm.”
After the discovery, worried residents reported the issue to the Environment Agency and Tendring Council.
According to residents, the hole has now been covered with a temporary fixture, yet residents are worried the actual repair works might leave the area unpassable for some time.
Damian Williams, Tendring Council corporate director for operations and delivery, said: “We were made aware of the damage to the sea wall last Thursday and the situation was monitored over the weekend to ensure it wasn’t failing any further.
“Our teams have secured the breach and will be checking for any other areas that require attention.
“We will also seek advice from structural engineers to learn what actions can be taken to strengthen these defences long-term.”
