A VILLAGE resident was left “disgusted” by a kerb and gutter “full of cigarette butt litter” outside a pub.
The resident, who lives in Parkeston, said they were ashamed of the town’s residents to see the amount of cigarette butts outside The Captain Fryatt Pub on Garland Road in Parkeston.
The individual, who does want to ban smoking, said they wanted pubgoers to properly dispose of their cigarettes butts and perhaps smoke in the beer garden.
The individual revealed they wanted to speak out after reading a Colchester Gazette article on a similar issue, which saw an individual fined £430 for dropping a cigarette outside a discount supermarket.
The frustrated resident said: “When I saw one person in Colchester having to pay over £400 for one cigarette butt, I thought to myself how much they could fine for all the cigarette butts outside the pub on Garland Road.”
A spokesman for the Captain Fryatt Pub stress it would "do more" to combat the issue.
They said: “I fully understand about any frustrations held by the public.
“We are unable to always monitor people smoking outside our premises, but we will do more by cleaning the cigarette butts outside the pub.”
Tendring Council leader Mark Stephenson said people should dispose of litter, including cigarette butts, “responsibly”.
Mr Stephenson added: “Tendring Council takes littering seriously and we are committed to keeping our streets clean for everyone”.
“The street is swept as part of a monthly schedule, and we have not received a complaint about this stretch in the past year.”
Mr Stephenson said officers “do patrol the area” and "will encourage" residents and businesses to dispose of all their waste properly.
“We welcome venues playing their part to manage issues with littering, with many ensuring litter picking takes place if their customers do not clear up after themselves," he said.
“TDC will always look to engage, explain and encourage to try to resolve an issue before we enforce – fines or prosecutions are a last resort.”
