WHEN I arrived at the Rainbow Cafe and Restaurant on Wick Lane in Harwich, I had already heard several good things about it in passing.
Meeting up with a friend, it did not take any time for us to be seated but we were told we could only have an hour – fair enough on a Friday lunch time when neither of us had the foresight to book ahead.
Ordering quickly, I chose the salmon and broccoli linguini for £13 from the specials menu – which was served with garlic bread - while my friend ordered an £8 pulled pork burger.
Inside it was a really nice place to have a conversation with the natural light, seaside views, and the good smells from both the restaurant and take-away bakery which certainly caught our eyes moments after sitting down.
Our food came after about 20 minutes and both dishes were piping hot.
Being a huge fan of salmon, I adored my pasta. It was a generously heaped portion – but at £13 in coastal Essex I would expect a main meal size.
I would certainly have my dish again, as it was hearty, comforting soul food.
The burger, I was told, was well worth the money with the chips served with it being extremely appetising too.
Being pleased with our purchases – which were served with soft drinks and tea – we both bought some baked goods for the journey home.
I chose a blueberry Victoria cake slice that looked heavenly on the display, and tasted fresh and just fruity enough, like jam, a few hours later.
The Rainbow Cafe and Restaurant is just the place to eat if you want your lunch to be a lovely and filling.
