Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze in a barn near Harwich last night.
Essex Fire and Rescue received reports from a number of people that a large fire near Rectory Lane in Ramsey had broken out.
Fire crews from Dovercourt, Manningtree and Colchester were sent to the scene at about 8.40pm.
They said a metal building, which measured about 40m by 20m, was alight.
Residents reported smoke in the area.
The A120 was closed in the area and traffic was diverted away from the scene for safety reasons.
Residents living close to Rectory Lane, said they heard sounds "like exploding fireworks" and were worried for the horses nearby, but no animals were reported to be injured.
It took firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the flames.

Crews remained at the scene to ensure all remaining hotspots were under control.
Firefighters eventually left at about 1am.
An investigation will be carried out into the cause of the blaze.
