ESSEX Pedal Power in Harwich and Dovercourt celebrated its first year and is giving away 500 bikes with a community celebration.

The group is one of the flagship programmes of the Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot which provides free bikes to residents in the county’s most disadvantaged communities.

The scheme has Essex County Council, The Active Wellbeing Society, Community Volunteering Services Tendring, and others as key partners.

The Harwich and Dovercourt group aims to give away 670 free bikes by 2025 and with more than 500 already being distributed - 261 being children's bikes.

On June 22, residents were invited to join a led ride from the town's Cricket Club to Cliff Park, where festivities continued including games and music.

Carina Nea, Essex Pedal Power coordinator in Harwich and Dovercourt, said: “Our one-year celebration event alongside Harwich Festival was a great opportunity to bring people of all ages together from across the community.

“Last month we gave out our 500th bike at the Tour De Tendring to a family and now the whole family are able to get out and spend quality time together on their bikes.”
