The SECOND Mysteries of Mistley Festival was a major success with organisers saying it has “already become an institution” for the village.

Hundreds of people joined the Mysteries of Mistley Festival, a trail exploring the village’s architecture, historic landmarks, scenic views, businesses, and sports clubs.

The one-day event had stops including Bowls, Cricket and Rugby Clubs, Cooper’s Art Gallery, Tea at the Quay, Mistley Fisheries, the Old Knobbley tree, and Station Hair and Beauty and EDME.

The Mistley Towers and the Witchfinder grave were also popular.

Renata Faldo, of EDME, came up with the idea for the festival in March 2023, and also brought the organisations together for the event.

Ms Faldo said: “They pulled all the stops out to make people feel welcome and to spark their curiosity.

“Everyone went above and beyond – and it all created a huge buzz around the village. Huge gratitude to everyone who contributed."

She added: “Thank you also to English Heritage who permitted the opening of the Towers, which was massively popular.”

While Bob Gooding, Chair of the Manningtree and Mistley Museum and History Group, who was stationed at the Towers, said: “We had a brilliant day with a rough count of 300 visitors to the Towers.

“The vast majority showed a great deal of interest in the history of the site and indeed Mistley itself, including many newcomers to the area. All really appreciated the event! Several commenting on what a great idea it was to do this.”

Participating organisations were pleased with the day, with Mistley Rugby Club chair, Neil Baxter, adding: “It was a terrific event, brilliantly organised and enjoyed by hundreds of local people.

“We had quite a few people coming across the threshold who beforehand weren’t even aware of the Club. They were very pleasantly surprised, and we now have new members as a result.  Well done to EDME, Renata and Laura in particular, for creating the festival, and to everyone for making it such a fun event.”
