HARWICH’s The Crown Post pub serves delicious homemade food at a fair price and we think it is more than worthy of its gorgeous 16th century interior.
The Crown Post, in Church Street, in the heart of Old Harwich was already known to me as a ‘great restaurant’, and after a busy Wednesday in July I was glad to finally be able to check it out.
Inside I was greeted by a few friendly pub goers and then was kindly escorted upstairs to the huge dining room. It did feel a bit cavernous as I was only person there so far in the evening.
Having been in a few similar Tudor-style houses in Harwich, I may not have been surprised by the historic appearance, but I did love dining with the original exposed wooden beams.
Keeping the ‘old world’ theme alive, I ordered the Post pie of the day which I was pleased to hear was game, a meat I had never tried before, and chose to have it with vegetables, gravy, and mashed potatoes.
Perhaps a sign of an attractive meal, is that in a heatwave, my eyes still ballooned at the sight of the huge portion of the somewhat wintry food.
I was told that the pie was made that day by the owner’s mother. The pie’s size, pastry, and rich filling proved it was unique and I haven't had a pie like that ever.
Having had a twenty-minute wait, luckily my appetite was strong enough to eat the meal and it was so good.
Another intrigue was that the food was delivered up a lift, likely a necessity with the old building’s stairs, another charming touch.
The ‘Post Pie of the day’ at £13.95 is great value for money, and I have already decided, in advance, that my next meal without a doubt will be ‘Donna’s Famous Fish Pie’.
