MORE than 600 people turned out to watch a pram race in Mistley, with organisers hoping it will now become an annual fixture.

The family-friendly event, which returned last year after a 45-year hiatus to mark the King's coronation, was run by Mistley Parish Council, but this year's event was staged by Mistley Rugby Union Football Club.

Eight teams took took part in the adult pram race wearing fancy dress while about 50 youngsters, aged six to 15, received medals for taking part in the children's race which was a new addition this year.

Adult entrants paid £15 which entitled them to beers and cocktails at eight pop-up 'pubs' along the route.

Rugby club president Mark Towler said: “Many thanks to all organisers and volunteers who contributed to a fabulous day.

"The perfect weather ensured the day was a total success, as seen by the huge number of visitors."

Former club president Willy Meston said he hoped the pram race would now become an annual fixture to give something back to the people of the village.

The event was made possible due to support from Pallet Plus who provided a truck which was used as a stage and by local companies who gave donations towards the cost of the event.

They included Edme, Rose Builders, Percival Engineering, Greene King, Estuary Wine Bar, the Blacksmiths Arms, Matilda's Cakes, Vivo Pizza, Barry's Fish and Chips, James' burgers, and Mario's Ice Cream.
