NEW images have shown what Harwich Library will look like after a major revamp to upgrade facilities and create new adult community learning classrooms are completed.

Harwich Library, on Upper Kingsway, closed on September 12 and will reopen at a temporary base on September 26 at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre on Main Road.

The refurbishment is expected to take until summer 2025.

Plans include the creation of a larger mezzanine floor to accommodate Adult Community Learning Essex (ACL Essex).

It will have two classrooms which can support 40 learners.

The space will also be available for use by the community.

The library’s transformation is part of the government-funded £9 million Dovercourt Capital Regeneration Project and is being spearheaded by Essex County Council and Tendring Council.

The county council said: "We want to develop the existing library so that it is fit for the future.

"Public space inside the library will benefit from redecoration and new furniture, energy-saving lighting, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning."

County Hall cabinet member for education Tony Ball said: “It’s fantastic news that we’re bringing ACL Essex to the heart of the community in Harwich.

"This will make learning more accessible for residents and provide more opportunities for local people to learn new skills and access new job opportunities, such as those that will be created by the Freeport East proposal.
