AN Australian company has opened its first UK office in Harwich at Freeport East, with one councillor saying that this is a sign that promised jobs are now becoming "a reality".

Rux Energy, a hydrogen storage solutions company based in Sydney, has opened its first office outside Australia in Harwich.

The base will be a hub for Rux Energy’s UK and European operations as well as playing a “crucial role” in the firm’s products which are designed to enable efficient, safe and low-cost hydrogen storage.

Chief executive Dr Jehan Kanga said: “We are thrilled to establish our European presence in Harwich, a location that aligns perfectly with our strategic goals and commitment to sustainability.

“This new office will allow us to better serve our customers and partners, and help accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.”

Steve Beel, chief executive of Freeport East, said since signing a memorandum of understanding, an agreement, with Rux Energy earlier this year, he was "delighted" to help Rux Energy establish itself in the UK.

Mr Beel said: “Freeport East is rapidly establishing itself as a go-to location for those innovating in green hydrogen and we are confident that with Rux opening their new office in Harwich, it will further help us to build a cluster of progressive clean energy and maritime businesses in the local area.”

David Camerlengo, senior trader and commissioner at the Australian government’s Trade and Investment Commission, Austrade, said: “Austrade has been supporting Rux Energy with their international goals for 18 months and so we are delighted to see their ongoing development in the UK now manifest itself into a tangible UK presence.

“Their storage solution is eye-catching for the hydrogen sector and, as a torchbearer for other Australian hydrogen innovators, we look forward to supporting their continued growth here in UK.”

Tendring Council deputy leader Ivan Henderson said: “Our ambition is to make Harwich and Bathside Bay a national leader in the green energy revolution, so we warmly welcome this innovative international enterprise to help us realise that goal.

“The council is a member of the board of Freeport East, which has been providing support to Rux Energy to expand into Harwich. Residents will be pleased to see the promised benefits of freeport status becoming a reality with the creation of jobs and a boost to the local economy.”
