HARWICH Connexions is taking part in national Community Transport Week after helping 44,000 passengers in the past year.

Harwich Connexions, a not for profit community organisation operating in the Harwich area since 2001, provides a number of services in the Harwich area including community transport, the Enterprise Centre, a 26-bed visitor hostel, and is home for both Noah’s Nursery and the Windmill Nursery.

Community Transport Week, which runs from October 14-18, celebrates the dedicated staff and volunteers.

The week also promotes the “often overlooked” community transport sector, to politicians and policy makers.

Richard Colley, chairman of Harwich Connexions, said: “Community Transport Week shines a spotlight on the worthwhile work of local teams of volunteers, drivers and coordinators to support residents facing mobility challenges.

“Their contribution extends far beyond transportation — they help build connections and foster a sense of community.”

“A notable local partner has been the Harwich and District Fellowship for the Sick for funding the introduction of the hospital hopper service which benefits Harwich residents needing transport to attend appointments at the main Colchester hospital sites.”

Debbie Hill, executive co-ordinator at Harwich Connexions, said: “From our hub at the Park Pavilion Harwich we provide transport for individuals who cannot use conventional public transport due to age, mobility, or geographic constraints to access essential services, including shopping, health appointments, support groups, social outings and visits to friends and family."

Harwich Connexions operates a fleet of wheelchair-accessible mini-buses and provides a Harwich town dial-a-ride service, rural shuttle bus travel to and from nearby villages and towns, and the hospital hopper service.

Over the past year, 44,000 passengers travelled on Harwich Connexions community transport services.

Senior citizen bus passes are valid for community bus travel.

Seats and journeys need to be pre-booked by phoning Harwich Connexions on 01255 552010 or by going to the Park Pavilion hub.
