ROUGH seas, cold weather, a hammock for a bed and all for 28 days.

That was the life for crew onboard Trinity House lightships.

Author David Cleveland tells the history of the ships off the Essex and Suffolk coast and what life was like to work on them in his new 48-page booklet.

Lightships also tells the story of the LV18, the last manned lightship, which was restored by the Pharos Trust and is moored at Harwich Quay.

The booklet is on sale for £5 at the lightship, Townsend book shop in Manningtree, and Mistley Post Office.

All proceeds from sales will go to the ongoing maintenance of the lightship.

On Sunday July 22 Mr Cleveland will be onbaord the LV18 between 2.30pm and 3.30pm signing copies of the book.

Between 11am and 4pm the same day films will be shown at the Electric Palace on the theme of the Harwich sea.
