HARWICH and Dovercourt Rugby Club’s under-11s had a perfect finish to their season at the Sudbury Minis Festival.
Tries from Matthew McCue, Joe Sewell, Harry Woodley and Regan Constable (2) saw them get off to a winning start against Ipswich.
Getting back to basics, tackling hard and supporting their own runners, they were able to dominate play.
Next up were Colchester.
Harwich found themselves under immediate pressure, conceding a good try.
They kept their composure and worked themselves back into the game, with Harry Pitham, Samuel Messenger, Nathan McClelland-Scott, Joshua Reason and Billy Freeman-Woolley working hard for the team.
Ioan Woodward and Constable (2) scored tries – the first of which saw Harwich deep in their own half, when William Pearce made an outstanding long cross-field kick for Constable to pick up on the bounce and race home to score. Harwich proceeded to the final as pool winners, where they faced Diss.
Making a strong start, Harwich were in control, with tries from Constable, Sewell and Pearce.
Diss got one back before a determined run from Woodward took Harwich into a 4-1 lead.
Diss fought back with two tries in quick succession and Harwich had to dig deep to see out the win.
It’s been another fantastic season for this group of players and one where they have had some real tests, so to win another trophy at the end of it was totally deserved.
Three under-12s – George Smith, Josh Kirk and Elliott Neville – once again represented the club brilliantly, teaming up with Stowmarket to form a Barbarians side.
They all played very well and have shown outstanding commitment during a tough season.
