A FOOTBALL club has won a slice of a new £75,000 sports fund backed by former England cricketer Darren Gough.

The £75,000 Gigaclear Rural Sports Club Fund will support Lawford FC as well as other clubs based in rural communities across the broadband company’s network, which spans 26 counties.

Two sets of goal posts have been given to Lawford FC to help aspiring Harry Kanes and Chloe Kellys practise their shooting skills.

Lawford FC club chairman John Duchars said: “The 7x7 goalposts and intermediate 11x11 goalposts will support the development of our youth and junior teams as the club continues to experience strong growth in participation by both boys and girls.

“As a charity we seek to make participation in grassroots football available to as many individuals as possible within the local community by keeping our membership fees low.”

Mr Duchars said he was grateful to both Gigaclear Rural Sports Club Fund and the Football Foundation for their support.

Fund ambassador and former England cricketer Darren Gough said: “Since launching the fund, it has gone from strength to strength, providing valuable support where it is needed most”.

“It’s great to see so much kit and equipment being sent out to rural sports clubs such as Lawford FC. I believe it will help make a difference to players now and to the rural sports teams of the future.”

Lawford FC play their matches in School Lane and have more than 250 players registered across three senior teams, including a women’s team, as well as 14 teams in the youth and junior section, from under-sevens upwards.
